3 easy steps to naturally clean soap scum from your bathroom

soapscum natural cleaning

Cleaning the bathroom is not generally considered fun.

So here are some ultra easy steps to clean and then maintain a bathroom free of soap scum

I’ve been reading a few posts, blogs, articles etc on how to keep your bathroom sparkly clean and shiny new.

And one of the more recent suggestions is to stop using soap…of any sort, and to start using a detergent based “body gel” rather than  a soap, and will clean away all that awful soap scum. Just like that. Magic! Puff! And all your cares disappears along with your soap scum…….and the natural flora and vital sebum on your skin!

‘K, but no thanks.

So, I’ll take it back a few steps (mostly because I’m a “why” learner) and give you all the important bits and bobs, as well as let you in on some pretty easy and cheap cleaning tips for your bathroom.

STEP 1 – What causes that soap scum in the first place?

As the name suggests, soap scum is caused by bar soap. Specifically the paraffin in the bar soap, as well as minerals in hard water combine with the this and deposit on surfaces. Then to top it off, dust, dirt and body oils and stuff, then all stick to the scum. Gross!

STEP 2 – I already have soap scum, so how do I clean it off?

Before starting a maintenance plan, yes! You will need to clean off existing scum.

Marble Paste

marble paste, grout cleaner, shower screen, glass, tiles, vegan friendly, no animal testing, plant based, earth based, organic, natural cleaning, cleaning products, naturalI definitely recommend the Scrub Me Polish Me Marble Paste. All natural, with bacteria and mould inhibiting benefits. And scrubs like a 1700’s ship deckhand! The beauty of this cleaning paste is that the marble flour doesn’t dissolve away, so it will keep on scrubbing and cleaning until you rinse it away. I recommend it, simply because it works! REALLY well.

However, if you just want to use products you may already have around your home, here’s some more for you:

Lemon Juice and/or Vinegar

Pour straight lemon juice (freshly squeezed or bottled concentrate) onto a soft sponge. Wipe the dampened sponge over all the glass surfaces. Leave the lemon juice to work its magic for a few minutes. Thoroughly rinse away lemon juice with plenty of clean water or white vinegar then water. Dry glass to a shine with paper towel.

Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle. You may wish to dilute the vinegar up to 50/50 with water and add a squeeze of lemon for a fresh scent. Drench the glass surfaces with the vinegar solution. Leave for a few minutes then work over the stains with a soft sponge or soft-bristled brush. Apply more solution if necessary. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Dry glass to a shine with paper towel.
But why Lemon juice or vinegar? I’m so glad you asked 😉 To put it quite simply, the lemon and vinegar are acidic. While soap is alkaline. So put the two together to counteract each other. That’s a fairly basic explanation, to help you understand why.

Bi-Carb Soda or Salt

Both. Either. These are used for their scrubbing abilities. By using a scrubbing agent in the cleaning, you’re making your life easier and the cleaning job that much quicker. Add in some vinegar or the lemon juice mentioned above, and it will scrub and dissolve all the soap scum away far easier and quicker. But, just in case you don’t have bi-carb or salt in your pantry, in an emergency, try some toothpaste! This gives the same scrubbing action as Marble paste (in fact, some toothpastes even have food grade marble flour in them) or either the salt or bi-carb. Too easy.

STEP 3 All Clean. How do I stop the scum from coming back?

Great work cleaning your bath and shower screens. So, to keep them sparkling clean and shiny, here are a few tried and tested tips.

  1. Switch from bar soap to a liquid soap. Just make sure it’s not a commercial detergent based body gel. Castile soap is so gentle on skin, easy to use and doesn’t leave scum on your shower screens.
  2. Pop down to your local store and grab yourself a little squeegee type thing. And simply squeeg (???) dry your shower down after use. This stops the minerals and paraffin sitting in the water droplets and then turning into soap scum.
  3. For baths, add a little teaspoon of Epsom salts to your bath. This will help any soap residue to dissolve into water and easily wash away down the drain, rather than leaving a dirty ring around your bath.

So that it my step plan to remove and eliminate soap scum from your life…..bathroom at least.

If you have any other tips that have worked well, pop them below in the comments. I’d love to hear.

According to me, bathroom cleaning is such a worst part I have ever seen. When I get into my apartment for the first time, I was cleaning my bathrooms. But it’s a really hard job you know. Then I decided to hire a servant. Now my servant cleans my bathrooms and I also take care of it.
